Frequently asked questions
The short version of how Provindex works, where its data comes from, and what it costs.
- What is Provindex?
- A searchable directory of U.S. healthcare providers with Medicare PECOS enrollment status, plus monitoring that alerts you when a provider you track falls out of enrollment or is deactivated.
- Where does the data come from?
- Publicly available federal sources — CMS NPPES, the Medicare PECOS Ordering/Referring file, and the NUCC taxonomy code set. Provindex is not affiliated with or endorsed by CMS, Medicare, or any government agency.
- How often is the data updated?
- We check CMS’s published files every day and refresh as soon as new files appear, so changes usually show up within a day of CMS publishing them. Because government data can still lag or contain errors, always verify enrollment directly with CMS before making a billing decision.
- What does “monitoring” a provider do?
- Add a provider to one of your lists and we’ll watch their PECOS enrollment and deactivation status. When something changes, you get an in-app notification and an optional email digest. See pricing for how many providers each plan can monitor.
- Why does PECOS enrollment matter?
- Medicare rejects claims when an ordering or referring provider isn’t actively enrolled in PECOS. Catching a lapse early lets you resolve it before claims are denied.
- How much does it cost?
- There’s a free tier, plus paid plans for teams and agencies. See the pricing page for current plans and limits.
- Can I cancel anytime?
- Yes. You can cancel from your billing settings at any time; your paid access continues through the end of the current billing period. See our Terms for details.
- Is my information private? Do you sell data?
- We don’t sell your personal information. See our Privacy Policy for what we collect and how it’s used.
- I’m a provider — why is my phone number and address listed without my consent?
- The contact details on your profile come from the public NPPES record tied to your NPI — the information you (or your practice) filed with CMS when you registered or last updated that NPI. We don’t collect it from you or buy it from a data broker; we mirror what CMS publishes, and NPPES data is public federal data that anyone can search and reuse. Provindex is not affiliated with or endorsed by CMS.
- Why does it show what looks like my home address?
- NPPES has no separate “home” field — it lists the practice location on file for your NPI. Many individual providers and sole proprietors registered a home address as their practice location, so that’s what CMS publishes and what we display. If that address is out of date, the fix is to update your NPPES record (see below).
- How do I correct or remove my information?
- It depends on what you want:
- To change the data everywhere it’s published — CMS, Provindex, and other directories built on NPPES — update it at the source: nppes.cms.hhs.gov. Our directory refreshes from CMS regularly, so corrections flow through on the next sync.
- To suppress your profile on Provindex specifically, contact us, choose “Provider data or opt-out,” and include your NPI. We’ll email a confirmation link to verify the request is really yours; once you confirm, your profile is removed from search and public listing.
- I opted out — why does my information still appear elsewhere?
- Suppressing your profile on Provindex hides it here only. It doesn’t change the underlying government records, which remain public at their source and may still appear on CMS’s own tools and other directories. To change the data itself, update your NPPES record at nppes.cms.hhs.gov.
- Does Provindex provide medical or billing advice?
- No. Provindex is an informational tool and does not provide medical, legal, billing, or compliance advice. You’re responsible for verifying information and your own compliance with Medicare rules.
- How do I get help?
- Reach out through our contact page and we’ll get back to you.
